How to Astral Project

This complete guide on astral projection offers an overview of astral travel, how it’s done, & what safety caution should be considered.

How to Astral Project

Astral projection–also known as astral travel–is a centuries-old, cross-cultural practice still fascinating in our modern world.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the technique and wondered how it works. Or maybe you’ve encountered different out-of-body experiences and would like to learn about this more controlled method.

Either way, you’ve come to the right place. This guide offers an overview of astral travel, how it’s done, and what safety precautions should be considered before you start your journey.

What is Astral Projection

Astral Projection

But, astral projection is an out-of-body experience that operates on the assumption that a person’s consciousness can be separated from their physical body and exist independently as an astral form. Once freed from physical reality, your celestial body can travel great distances by entering the astral plane, even though your material body remains in its original physical space.

Astral projection uses meditative techniques to free your mind and has been likened to lucid dreaming, deep hypnosis, and even near-death experiences.

Some practitioners view astral projection as a mode of transportation that allows them to travel to places on Earth and other realms they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Other practitioners consider astral projection more like an extreme meditative state that opens your mind to universal consciousness.

Either way, astral projection involves freeing yourself from physical constraints to experience, learn, or find something new.

Is astral projection real or proven?

astral projection real or proven

Like many esoteric practices, it isn’t easy to prove whether or not astral projection occurs.

Science exists as a method of explaining how the world works; what laws and patterns exist in nature. As a species constantly learning and trying to understand, we are limited, at any given moment, by the technology we’ve developed and the language we have for explaining the world around us.

Researchers have tried various methods of neuroscientific study and observed individuals while they were attempting astral projection. But the nature of astral travel means many participants enter such a study with an implicit bias. As a result, all studies thus far have resulted in unclear data.

Has the scientific method verified that consciousness can be separated from the physical body? No. But the brain is still full of mysteries we’ve yet to understand. Things like astral projection exist on the cusp of what we know and what remains unexplainable.

That said, just because it hasn’t been scientifically proven doesn’t mean you can’t gain something from its practice.

Is it safe to astral a project?

trying to force the body out of its natural state

Any action that forces the body out of its natural state can be risky. Our consciousness is tied to our body for a good reason. The two aspects of communication allow us to experience and make sense of the physical world in which we live.

Dramatic anecdotes exist from people who attempted astral projection and could never reconnect their conscious minds with their bodies. Others experience ‘psychic’ or ‘astral’ damage when they suffer stress or injury while traveling the astral plane. The echo of that discomfort may exist in their physical bodies afterward.

Many myths surround the dangers of astral projection, but since the process itself can’t be scientifically proven, its risks can’t be scientifically determined. Above all else, you should listen to seasoned practitioners and follow their guidance.

That being said, most stories of frightening or harmful astral experiences come from people who attempted something with a negative mindset. Using astral projection to harm someone or do evil is frowned upon and draws terrible energy to the practitioner.

But astral projection is perfectly safe if you practice responsibly and maintain a healthy level of humility. When done correctly, there should be no real physical danger in astral projection.

How to Astral Project: A Step-by-Step Guide

There are various methods of astral projection, and as you become more familiar with the process, you’ll pick and choose which permutations suit you best.

But these eight steps are a great place to start.

Step 1: Choose your space.

Astral projection should be approached from an entirely comfortable position. Choose a calm, quiet place that’s free of any negative associations. Comforting items that help create a pleasant sensory experience are beneficial–pillows, blankets, incense, calming light, etc.

Before undertaking astral travel, spend time in your chosen space while you set your intentions and fill it with peaceful and positive energies.

Step 2: Breath purposefully

Center yourself by breathing deeply. The 4-7-8 breathing practice is an excellent technique for astral projection. With your mouth closed, breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Then exhale through your mouth while making a whooshing sound for a count of eight.

This complete breathing cycle sets a deep rhythm and helps thoroughly oxygenate you for optimal centering and mental clarity. Some people find that this breathing technique makes them sleepy. If that’s the case, take the opportunity to rest.

Astral projection should only be attempted when you’re energized, so if the meditative process makes you tired along the way, take it as a sign to rest and make your attempt later.

Step 3: Enter a meditative state.

You have options regarding tuning your consciousness to the right mental state for astral travel. Meditation, generally speaking, is the most efficient way to do this. But there are various methods to choose from to get you there.

Repeat a mantra or prayer.

Choose a relatively short and straightforward phrase or prayer that you can repeat and focus on to establish a rhythm. Choosing a word that encapsulates your intention will serve the double purpose of relaxing and properly concentrating your energy.

Use binaural beats.

This is an illusion that the brain creates when you listen to two tons of different frequencies simultaneously (one in each ear). The brain hears a style that matches the discrepancy between the two original tones and uses that tone to synchronize neural activities across the brain. This synchronization can help you focus and relax your mind.

Enter a hypnotic state.

You might need another person for this one. While there are ways to enter into a hypnotic state independently, it typically requires practice. Try this guide to learn how to hypnotize yourself and prepare for astral projection.

Lucid dreams

This dreaming method is popular among those who practice esotericism because it allows us to access parts of our psyche that we’re not generally in touch with. Accessing these elements can teach us about ourselves. Try this guide if you’re not familiar with lucid dreams already.

Step 4: Visualize

Once you’re in a deep enough meditative state that your mind either feels empty or your thoughts manage to guide themselves, it’s time to visualize.

Before visualization, you should feel a bit as you do before falling asleep when you’re approaching dreams but are still aware that you’re awake.

Try to picture your spirit leaving your physical body when it feels right. Imagine what you look like, sitting in your safe space, with your eyes closed, breathing steadily. And then imagine putting distance between that material body and your astral body.

Step 5: Connect with your astral body.

While your astral body isn’t made of flesh and bone, it can still be conceived as having limbs, hands, and all the parts necessary for sensory experience.

See the shape of it in your mind’s eye. Notice how it’s similar to your physical body and how it differs. Did your consciousness change your appearance or presentation in some way? If so, it might direct you to where you’re meant to travel or what you’re meant to do on the astral plane.

Step 6: Choose your destination.

Please think of the astral plane as a mirror universe to our own. The same places, landscapes, and spaces exist in the heavenly realm in our physical world.

It helps to start small. During your first astral projection, you should try traveling a short distance. Try entering a different room in your house or apartment. Don’t just call upon the memory of it–see it as it is in that exact moment.

Next time, try visiting a place in your city or neighborhood you’ve been to, then try one you haven’t. Eventually, you can work up to traveling long distances and visiting lands you’ve never seen before.

When experienced, you might even be able to astral project into celestial or heavenly realms.

Step 7: Experience

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, experience it! You might not have a flesh and bone body to work with, but your astral body can see, hear, feel, smell, and taste all the same. And because you’re meditative, you can tap into senses beyond the primary five. What kind of energy do you feel? Can you sense the presence of other entities?

Some people set out with a task. Perhaps they want to change something in the physical realm, so they travel to the heavenly realm and adjust there. Or maybe they want to experience something that would otherwise be dangerous.

You can’t physically step on the sun, for example, but you might be able to experience it via astral projection.

Try to remember these experiences as clearly as you can so that you can chronicle them and build upon your experiences.

Step 8: Return to your physical body.

When you’re satisfied with your adventure and ready to return, you can make it happen. Visualize your astral body resettling into your physical body.

Some profound journeys that last for a long time might be more difficult to return from because you’ve been away from the physical world long enough that it only exists in the back of your mind. Masters at astral projection sometimes journey for so long that they fail to eat and drink.

In these cases, it helps to remember the idea of the silver cord. This rope of energy connects your astral body to your physical body. It’s an ethereal, rather than the material cord, so it cannot be severed or broken.

Lodge the image of that silver cord in your mind and associate it with the closure of your journey. When you realize it’s time to come back, focus again on the silver cord image and follow it. It’s like leaving yourself a trail of breadcrumbs to find your way home.

Remember that you cannot possibly astral project without your body’s strong and healthy foundation. As incredible as celestial projecting can be you must return to the physical realm often enough to care for yourself.

Step 9: Record and Assess

Once you’ve returned to yourself, do one or two additional deep breathing cycles and open your eyes slowly. Sometimes the return to your physical form can be overwhelming to the senses.

Although unnecessary, a journal for recording your experiences is a great way to reflect on and improve your astral projection techniques.

Some people find astral projection to be spiritually draining–it does require a lot of attention and energy, after all.

Reflect on how you feel. Did you do anything incredibly taxing while you were traveling? If so, assess your physical body for any echoes of that stress or discomfort. Be kind to yourself as you recover.

Don’t take your first journey alone.

journey alone

While astral projection is often considered a solitary endeavor, your first journey shouldn’t be embarked upon alone.

You don’t need a course or any special training when you do an astral project, but the guidance and wisdom of a seasoned practitioner are invaluable. They can pass on their knowledge, encourage you through the meditative process, and help you establish good habits.
