How To Cast A Magic Spell Circle

If you're looking to cast a magic spell circle, this guide is for you! Learn the basics of casting a magic spell circle and practice making.

How To Cast A Magic Spell Circle

The magic circle, or ritual circle, is a primary component of magic used for centuries. The earliest known form of circle casting comes from ancient Mesopotamia, which the Sumerians called Zisurrû.

This circle-casting ritual created a sacred space where they would offer offerings to their ancestors, deities, and spirits. It was also a form of magical protection.

Casting ritual circles is integral to the Wiccan tradition and traditional witchcraft. Casting a circle is often the first step baby witches take when practicing witchcraft!

The sacred circle acts as a barrier between the person and the spirits they’re calling upon, as a portal to connect them to their spirits, a consecrated space to perform their other spell work and banish evil spirits.

Using a ritual circle is up to a person’s philosophy, as some people don’t find casting a circle necessary. Even materials can vary depending upon the individual–some cast a circle with visualization! Use your intuition to guide you.

Materials Needed

It’s important to remember that there is no proper way to cast a magic circle.

Many traditions utilize different materials and methodologies for casting their ritual circles. You need to use your intuition and the materials available to you.

In this version of the ritual, you’ll need representations of the four elements:

  • A bowl of salt, flour, dirt, or other materials to represent Earth.
  • A bowl of any water (moon water) to represent Water.
  • Incense, resin, or burning herbs to represent Air.
  • Candle or open flame to represent Fire.

You will also need an offering, but you can use flowers or your incense as an offering.

Some people use a ritual wand or a dagger, but you can use your finger or visualize it if you don’t have that.

Total Materials Needed

  • Material of choice to create the circle (salt, flour, flowers, rocks, twigs, crystals, etc.)
  • Candles colored by correspondence (black candles for darker work, white candles for cleansing or general spirit work, a red candle for love, a blue candle for psychic abilities, or whatever color is associated with the spirit you’re communicating with)
  • Incense
  • Ritual wand or ritual dagger
  • A bowl of water
  • A bowl of material of choice (salt, flour, dirt, etc.)

Your materials may vary depending on your availability; feel free to swap out and substitute materials!

Cleanse Your Space

Tidy up the room and make space for your magic circle in your safe space. If you’re outside, move branches, leaves, or trash out of the way.

Then begin to cleanse the area energetically and spiritually. You can do this with simple visualization and speak your intent into the room, an intent such as:

“I cleanse this space of all negative energy. I remove all unwanted energy from this room.”

You can also cleanse the space with a broom beforehand. If you don’t have a broom, you can use your hands and visualize your hands cleansing away the negative energy and harmful air in the area.

Cleansing the space with a broom before casting a circle is crucial in Wiccan tradition before performing any Wiccan ritual or spell.

You can look at this article for more in-depth ways of cleansing your space.

Consecrate Your Materials

Before you begin constructing your sacred circle, it’s essential to consecrate or bless all materials used. Sometimes objects pick up dirty energy, and we also need to imbue the intent we want them to use into the objects.

You can consecrate your materials by passing them through smoke from sage or incense, stating your intent to bless them with their specific use in your spell, and visualizing the materials becoming blessed. You can anoint your items as well with anointing oil.

Pray over each item you will use and thank the items for allowing you to use their energies in your spell.

At this point, make sure to focus entirely on your intent. Ensure all your energy and mental focus go towards consecrating your items and casting your circle.

Creating Your Circle

Take four candles, or other distinct markings, to mark the four cardinal points: north, east, south, and west.

Once the north, south, west, and east sides are physically marked, take some of your Earth material and circle your cleansed sacred space.

The circle can be as big or as small as you wish.

Facing north and moving clockwise, slowly sprinkle and dust your Earth elements in the perimeter of your sacred circle. Form your circle while keeping your cardinal point markers and materials in the center.

Next, facing north and moving clockwise, sprinkle water around the circle.

Next, facing north and in the same motion, wave your incense smoke around the circle.

Envision the energy from the elements concentrating within the circle. From the north to the east to the south, and the west, feel calm and envision crackling flames surrounding the perimeter of your circle.

Calling Upon the Elements

After you’ve done that, thank the elements. What you have to say is different depending on tradition, and if this is a group ritual, the high priest or high priestess will chant these.

This standard version of the ritual calling upon the elements from Friends of the Moon is a trusted and excellent source for witchcraft.

With this one, you start from the east and move clockwise until you end facing north.

“Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East, guardian spirits of Air, I do summon, stir and call you up to witness these rites and guard this circle, and I bid you Hail and Welcome.

The Guardians of the Watchtowers of the South, guardian spirits of Fire, I summon, stir and call you up to witness these rites and guard this circle, and I bid you Hail and Welcome.

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the West, guardian spirits of Water, I do summon, stir and call you up to witness these rites and guard this circle, and I bid you Hail and Welcome.

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the North, guardian spirits of Earth, I do summon, stir and call you up to witness these rites and guard this circle, and I bid you Hail and Welcome.”

Now you’ve successfully cast your circle and can continue with your ritual.

Closing Your Circle

To end your ritual, which is called closing the circle, you can take a deep breath and begin to visualize all the energy and power you’ve accumulated during the ritual.

You can now say,

“I thank the spirits for their interaction. I respectfully and with grace end communication with all wanted and unwanted spirits.

May the circle be open but unbroken. May the peace of the Goddess be ever in our hearts. Merry meet and merry part. May the love of the Goddess be ever in our hearts. Merry meet and merry part.”

Now is the time to ground yourself in a circle. Take slow and deep breaths to ground yourself. Feel a sense of peace and ease rush over you, and allow the energy surrounding you to soak into you. Visualize the energy flowing through you, connecting to the ground and into the earth.

Quick Tips

If you’ve forgotten something outside your circle, you can open and close the process to allow things in or out.

If you need to step out of the circle, repeat, “I open this circle.” Facing north, move your finger in a cutting motion and visualize a door at the edge of your circle.

Once you’ve got what you need, enter your circle and repeat the same movement, except visualize sealing the door you’ve created.

“I close the entrance into this sacred site and continue.”
