Using Crystals to Heal

Some witches–and even non-witches–believe that crystals can have healing properties. Because they’re comprised of minerals, and our bodies, require minerals to function correctly, many swears by the effectiveness of healing crystals.

Each Stone Spirit is thought to help with different issues. Clear quartz, for example, is believed to have a general healing energy, while bloodstone is said to improve circulation.

How to energize and activate crystals

Crystals will come to you in a variety of forms. Some will be cut and polished into smooth figures, ready for exact use. Others may be rough, left in an imperfect state, and full of the natural energy that created them. Some–like geodes–will come to you for your action and attention.

No matter the state of your crystal, before you begin using it in your practice, you should consider resetting and energizing it. If the piece previously belonged to someone who imbued it with lots of valuable, positive energy, you can keep that momentum.

But if you don’t know who handled the crystal before you and don’t know its origins, you’ll want to cleanse it.

Plant them in the dirt.

Crystals come from the earth, so it is no surprise that burying them overnight can serve as a reset. This can be done outside your garden or in a houseplant’s container. Just be aware that soil contains moisture, which can damage water-soluble stones.

Cleanse them with selenite.

Using a selenite wand is an excellent way to cleanse smaller crystals. If you don’t have selenite in wand form, you can put it in a dish with the stones that need to reset or place everything on an altar together.

It’s also helpful to have a few tiny bits of selenite that you can place in a triangle or circle the stone you hope to cleanse.

Pass them through sacred smoke.

Burning certain herbs will create a cleansing smoke that you can use to clean your crystals of negative or inharmonious energies. Sage is perhaps the most popular herb for this method, but remember that smudging is a culturally significant custom.

Alternatively, you can use incense to provide a kind of cleansing smoke and to help create a generally calming space to work.

Soak them

This method works for some stones and is very straightforward. Quartz crystals, in particular, stand up well to cleansing via soak. Place crystals that need cleansing into a vessel with clean or moon water and leave them to soak overnight.

But you must make sure that you’re not soaking water-soluble minerals. Some crystals, including popular ones like selenite, opal, moonstone, and malachite, should not get wet. Malachite, particularly, becomes toxic in water, so you must keep it dry. Others may not chemically dissolve, but you may damage them if they’re crumbly in texture or contained in a loose matrix.

How to Acquire Crystals

The easiest way to get your hands on these little treasures is to buy crystals online. Massive online suppliers like Amazon can offer just about any crystal you imagine in any shape you’d like. But smaller suppliers specializing in crystals and metaphysical supplies will probably have more exciting options.

Either way, remember that most crystals are still found in nature, not manufactured synthetically. That means someone has to dig them up.

This is why it’s essential to know the origin of the crystals you purchase to avoid unethically sourced materials. No amount of sacred smoke or moon water would rid a crystal of its bad energy if acquired unethically.

Another great option is your local metaphysical store. Small, rural areas might not have one, but most decent-sized cities and towns have at least one shop full of crystals, incense, and other items beloved by the alternative and new-age crowds. Many of these shops also sell “beginner” sets that will include most of the crystals listed later in the article.

Shopping local is a great way to support small businesses and ensure your new crystals are ethically sourced. You might even find a like-minded community that can be an indispensable resource to a new practitioner. The people who work at these shops typically have a real passion for it and will be able to recommend and even identify crystals for you.

In addition to the crystals themselves, it’s always good to keep a crystals book on hand to help with identification and meanings. While much of that information is available online, having a book or maintaining an account of your collection in a journal is a great way to practice mindfulness.

Basic Starter Crystals

First and foremost, pick crystals that you like the look of. Some people prefer crystals with absolutely no blemishes or inclusions. Others like a stone with a bit more character or a unique marking. Above all else, choose pieces that you feel drawn to.

Clear Quartz

The jack of all trades. A symbol of new beginnings. Clear quartz is one of the most straightforward stones, but it might be the most versatile crystal in your collection. Clear quartz is multi-purpose, functioning as a cleansing and healing stone.

Obsidian

Obsidian is an opaque black crystal with a structure like glass. As a symbol of Hecate–the Greek goddess of witchcraft–obsidian is known as the witch’s crystal. It’s excellent for banishing spells and scrying and provides a nice balance to crystals with much lighter energy.

Selenite

Selenite is a pure white, nearly opaque stone comprised of what looks like thin layers of ice compressed against one another. Lights pass through it in fascinating ways, so it’s excellent for magic that involves moonlight. It’s also beneficial for purifying all of your tools.

Rose Quartz

Amethyst

While amethyst has a unique name, it’s another variety of quartz–this time with iron. As the color of royalty, divinity, and spiritual enlightenment, amethyst is valued by crystal witches for its ability to center and sober the mind.

Citrine

Like amethyst, citrine is quartz that gets its color from iron. But instead of turning purple, citrine is yellow because it was formed under different pressure and temperature. Many crystals sold as citrine are amethysts that have been heat-treated to turn their iron from purple to yellow. Citrine is believed to be especially useful in divination, so many tarot readers and palmists keep citrine on hand.

Lapis Lazuli
