Chaos Magic: One of the most popular forms of contemporary witchcraft is the practice of chaos magic (sometimes spelled chaos magick). In our postmodern, increasingly agnostic culture, chaos magic appeals to those who want results without the added hassle of spirituality.

Chaos magic also speaks to our culture’s interest in DIY practices. This variety of magic allows witches to incorporate only those practices that give them the desired results. Chaos magicians encourage new practitioners to pick and choose methods from all sorts of different traditions and make them their own.

Concept and Terminology

The distinguishing trait of chaos magic is that it is essentially agnostic.

Unlike most forms of Western occultism, chaos magic does not believe in theology or religious rituals. Practitioners of chaos magic don’t believe that any god or omnipotent heavenly power exists because they do not believe in one objective truth.

The earliest developers of chaos magic were inspired by Wicca, Qabalah, and the Golden Dawn system, but they didn’t partake in any of the spirituality.

They ascribed to the power of belief, which affects change through psychological or supernatural means. In other words, it’s not the belief in a god, ritual, or symbol that makes magic work. No figure or force is bestowed with power because you practiced well enough. It’s just the power of faith itself that makes magic possible.

According to this theory, this is why so wide different varieties of occultism can produce results.

Chaos magic does not accept the existence of absolute truth. A chaos magician will tell you that occult symbols are arbitrary and only effective because of the practitioner’s beliefs.

Results-based magical practice

Historically, witchcraft and occultism have combined magical practice with spiritual beliefs. This required study in addition to practice. The goal was not merely to affect change through magic but also to better understand the world.

Chaos magic strips away spiritual concerns and focuses only on results-based magic. Early chaos magicians like Peter Carroll and Ray Sherwin built upon the philosophies that Austin Osman Spare developed, which rejected traditional techniques in favor of gnosis.

But they did believe that magical thought is an influential tool. By firmly believing it must work, practitioners impose their will on the world. Magic tells the universe what will happen, so it’s magic that a witch must win over.

A chaos magician has deep self-awareness. They believe in the context of their techniques, but they must be willing to cast it later aside if necessary and remain open to new methods.

Chaos vs. Kia

In the introductory text Liber Null and Psychonaut, Peter Carroll defines chaos as “the force which has caused life to evolve itself out of dust.” Chaos is the force that manifests in the physical world.

On the other hand, Kia was defined much earlier by Austin Osman Spare. Kia is the universal mind that each human’s consciousness is an aspect of.

Thus, chaos is an external force, while Kia is an internal force that humans can access. If practitioners can reconcile chaos with their Kia through magical practice, they can affect change and have some control over the world.

Practices

Chaos magical theory prioritizes practice over study or ritual (though ceremonial magic is used, separated from its spiritual meaning). While practitioners pull magical techniques from various traditions, they have developed a few practices specific to their needs.

Gnostic State

Chaos magic involves bypassing conscious thought to reach an altered state of consciousness. Practitioners call this process gnosis, or the gnostic state (taken from the Greek word for “knowledge”). The chaos magician hyper-focuses their mind on one point and lets worldly concerns disappear.

Three different types of gnosis can be achieved:

Inhibitory gnosis

This gnostic state is achieved through deep meditation, leading to a trance-like state via some form of self-control. Deep breathing, lucid dreaming, hypnosis, fasting, progressive muscle relaxation, and sensory deprivation are the most common techniques to drop into this state.

Ecstatic gnosis

Ecstatic gnosis is a mindless state reached by intense and excessive arousal. Dancing, flagellation, drumming, chanting, hyperventilation, sexual arousal, intense emotion, and hallucinogenic drugs can all achieve this state.

Indifferent vacuity

Indifferent vacuity involves casting a spell coincidentally while focusing on something else that requires your attention. Since your conscious mind is focused on the task, your unconscious power can engage in magical practice. An example? Mindlessly chanting to yourself as you physically engage in worldly tasks like doing the dishes or showering.

Sigil Work

In chaos magic, a sigil is a picture or glyph that represents a desire or intention.

Imagine you want to make more money at your job. You write the word “money” onto a piece of paper, each letter on top or connected to the last. On the page, it won’t be recognizable as the world’s “money.” You might be able to make out the “m” or the “y,” but otherwise, it just looks like a symbol.

You would then meditate on that sigil. Stare at it and focus on it while working toward a gnostic state (as listed above). Doing so “charges” or “launches” the sigil into action.

But afterward, you should make every attempt to forget the sigil itself. Try to keep it out of your conscious mind or even repress the memory so that it exists only in the subconscious back of your mind.

This transforms worldly desire into chaotic energy- the most likely to affect change.

Cut-up Technique.

The cut-up technique started in literary criticism, where writers and artists cut up pieces of existing text and rearrange them to create something new.

Chaos magic practitioners saw potential in applying this technique to magical endeavors because it breaks down the barriers of expectation and, thus, consciousness.

Perhaps the most obvious application of this technique regards spells. If you can’t find a love spell that speaks to you, try cutting up a couple of different love spells and piecing them back together.

Synchromysticism

This term merges the concepts of “synchronicity” and “mysticism.”

Blended, these terms account for the power behind events or circumstances that appear as coincidences. Since conscious action undermines the efficacy of magic, coincidences are the optimal means of affecting change.

Chaos magicians seek to engineer these moments of synchromysticism and exert control over the unseen forces of the world.

Chaos Magic vs. Eclectic Systems

Chaos and eclectic systems of magic encourage practitioners to incorporate different techniques from different traditions.

But eclectic witchcraft still tends to ground itself in some spiritual belief. Chaos magic rejects such a thing altogether.

Practical Tips for Chaos Magic

• Willpower and faith in the law of attraction will take you far. Don’t waste energy wondering if you’re performing a spell perfectly. Know that you’re performing it perfectly because it comes from you and the magnificent energies within you.
• While you don’t need to study complicated ritual systems, there are a few fantastic books to help you make sense of the chaos. Condensed Chaos, by Phil Hine, is a great place to start.
• Keep track of your learning and accomplishments by journaling your experiences. Chaos magic is intellectual rather than spiritual, so finding patterns in the magic will help you become a more successful practitioner.
